Subject: Lotus Notes client not launching - progress bar loops endlessly
Feedback Type: Problem
Product Area: Notes Client
Technical Area: Crash
Platform: Windows
Release: 8.5.2
Reproducible: Intermittent
We've had a few intermittent issues where Notes clients fail to load and just sit there looping through the progress bar over and over. I was able to piece together a troubleshooting process that appears to fix the problem when it appears, but would be interested if anyone else has seen this and knows how to prevent the cause. I'll include my troubleshooting steps here for anyone else that may be having the issue:
1.Begin with a clean reboot of the PC if possible. If remoted in, use NSD -Kill to stop all processes:
1.a Open a CMD window
1.b Enter the command CD \Lotus\Notes\Data to change to the data directory (modify to match your install path)
1.c Enter the command C:\lotus\Notes\NSD -kill (modify to match your install path)
1.d Repeat step 1.c and run NSD -kill a second time (I've sometimes had items take two passes)
2.Open the C: drive and navigate to the Notes Data folder
3. Locate the Workspace folder and rename it to WorkspaceOLD
4. If folder is successfully renamed, skip to step 12. If folder rename failed, go on to step 5.
5. If Windows prevents renaming the Workspace folder in step 3 above with a message indicating that a file or folder contained in Workspace is still in use, then open the Workspace folder.
6. Locate the file .rcp.lock and try to rename it to .rcp.lock.old It should generate a similar Windows message indicating the file is in use but should now indicate that the process using it is the rcplauncher.exe
7. Open the Task Manager and select the Processes tab
8. Turn on the Show processes from all users option.
9. Locate the rcplauncher process
10. Use the End Process button to halt the process. It will ask for a confirmation, indicate to end the process.
11. Return to the C:\Lotus\Notes\Data folder and attempt to rename the Workspace folder to WorkspaceOLD again.
12. Launch the Notes client. If it launches successfully, it will rebuild the Workspace folder (will take a little longer than normal while it does this.)
13. If Notes launches successfully, delete the WorkspaceOLD folder.
Note that rebuilding the Workspace folder will have a few side effects: The icon bar at the left edge of the client will lose any customizations and revert to being undocked. Right click on the Open button at top left to dock it again. Also, any document tabs that were left open at the top of the screen should have also been closed.
